  1. The rope bit deep into Aaron’s palm as he dangled high above the ballroom floor.
Below, the Lords and Ladies of the land went about their daily lives, too busy looking down on everyone around them to notice him dangling from the ceilings rafters.
A herald cried out for attention from where he stood by the door.
“Her Highness, the Crown Princess Gisselle.”
The massive doors opened. The Princess entered the room.
    Show time.
Aaron’s grip tightened around the razor sharp blade he held in his right hand as the Princess made her way up the center of the room. His focus shifted to those gathered on the sidelines, alert to any suspicious movement. He had not been a big fan of the plan to use the Princess as bait to catch her would be assassin. His opinion hadn’t mattered though. All he could hope for was to stop the killer in time.

Thanks for the opportunity to enter this contest. :) My name is Lindsi McIntyre and my blog is lindsi-mcintyre.squarespace.com

  2. He lowered himself down in the opening of the high vaulted ceiling. No failing this now. His hand grew sweaty as he clung to the rope. He breathed as quietly as possible.
The young man in a large robe walked ceremoniously down the velvet carpet. The splendidly-dressed nobles watched in reverent silence. As he walked toward the altar, where he would be crowned king, no one noticed the dark figure clinging to the rope above their heads.
The scene would all too soon erupt into a frenzy. He dared to hope that no one would see him a second too soon.
The reflection of the candlelit chandeliers glistened on the razor sharp blade. Almost there. His heart began beating rapidly.
Feet touching the ground, he sank lightly into the carpet. Time is of the utmost importance. He stood, the deadly weapon glistening in his hand.
Staring at his enemy, he plunged the blade into his back. He could hear the screams. “The king – is dead!” Chaos erupted. He could already see armed figures rushing towards him.
The rope burned his hand, but he held it tighter, as strong arms hoisted him upwards. Looking down, Derek stared at the figure of the man lying on the carpet. What have I done? Guilt swept over him. He had killed a man – in cold blood. With a dazed expression, he stared down at the bloody dagger in his hand. Closing his eyes, he sought to escape the terrible scene that lay before him.

  3. She tried not to look up, knowing that if she did, she would jeopardize this mission. A creak echoed through the chambers, Beatrice cringed, no one else seemed to notice it though. Why did he have to choose today? The day that the chamber would be most occupied. She shook her head, Klaus always liked a good challenge. She secretly rolled her eyes and turned back to her lady with smile. She loved these people, they were her family, they loved her more than her biological family. She was preparing for the worst, she wasn’t going to do her part, but she wasn’t going to turn in her own brother. The doors creaked open and instead of the King walking in, the captain of the guards walked in. She let out a sigh, maybe she wouldn’t have to incriminate her family. “I have been unanimously notified that there is an assassin in our midsts.” Beatrice could feel everyone freeze up. A million thoughts raced through her head, she looked up as the captain continued, “I have also been informed of who this assassin is, I am sorry Lords and Ladies but the royal family will not be presenting themselves today.” He directed his attention toward Beatrice and she felt arms grab her from behind, “Miss, I am arresting you on suspicion of assassination.” “Her heart dropped, her family had planned her capture, it was over.”

  4. Five more minutes…five more minutes…only five more minutes to hang from the ceiling. Marshall hated heights, he glanced at the king, trailing down the aisle. Couldn’t he walk any faster? Three more minutes…Just thr- *Crack!!!* Marshall felt the rope give way and a piece of timber fell with him to the floor. The king had just made it to the dais when Marshall untangled himself from the rope. Soldiers collected around him as he landed on his side. They lowered their spears at him, but Marshall held his hands up in surrender.

“I promise, this is not what it looks like.”

The general of His Majesty’s Army strode forward. “My lord, this is your newest form of protection. There are at least thirty others like him hiding in various parts of the room.” He bowed.

Marshall had one word in his mind as he staggered out of the room.

    “Liar…”
